Just stop trying to organize via facebook groups.

I wish people would stop organizing solely on facebook, which is owned by “Meta”. Especially if you’re organizing against the interests of the very people who own those social media platforms. If you use Facebook to find people, I get it, but at least have a separate email list and some way people can find your group outside of Facebook. I don’t use facebook at all and haven’t in years (since before the Cambridge Analytica scandal), and a great many people I know have never used it at all. If you’re trying to promote something, don’t you want to reach us? Based on stuff I’ve seen over the years, like shadowbanning and censorship, botnet trolls, disinformation campaigns and info cocoons; I don’t trust any social media, and neither should you, especially if you’re doing civic engagement organizing against the interests of the owners of these big platforms. Start using email lists again. Discord is not the most secure platform and not widely used among older folks. Whatsapp is owned by Meta, I’d sooner use Telegram but I wouldn’t recommend that. Groupme is owned by Microsoft and maybe a somewhat better choice for group chats. But there’s a reason you hear about Signal chats in the news, it’s because people who are up to interesting conversations don’t trust that the big tech companies won’t let them down. And I really only use Substack because I don’t have enough subscribers to even break even as it is, and I want people to be able to access my work via the provided substack services of voiceovers of text content and auto-transcripts of podcast recordings which are part of the service at no extra charge. I backup my email lists and contacts everywhere on a regular basis.
