Two things or multiple things can be true at once. Social media is toxic, and kids should have access to phone service. Social media is especially toxic for kids. I recognize that. I think it’s bad for adults, and the people who design them admit they design them to be addictive. And it’s obvious. The solution to this isn’t that kids can never have phones, which are also a communication tool! There should just be a way to control what the phones do, by the user and in the case of children, by parents. There should be regulations that stop companies from pushing toxic products and none of us should have to put up with apps made to be deliberately addictive or harmful. It’s bizarre that there’s this binary that either you allow kids to have phones OR you disallow them completely. It’s like saying kids can never have ice cream and there can be no food provided in schools at all ever, OR the kids need to be able to just wolf down gallons of ice cream all day in the classroom instead of paying attention in math class. That’s a ridiculous argument.
