This cross-sectional study of 540,667 adults hospitalized with COVID-19 included both inpatients and hospital-based outpatients with laboratory-diagnosed COVID-19 from March 1, 2020, through March 31, 2021. The database included reports from 592 acute care hospitals in the United States. The study was designed to examine risk factors associated with severe outcomes of COVID-19 including admission to an ICU or stepdown unit, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death. Main Findings: Certain underlying medical conditions were associated with an increased risk for severe COVID-19 illness in adults. Having multiple conditions was also associated with severe COVID-19 illness. Obesity, diabetes with complications, and anxiety and fear-related disorders had the strongest association with death. The number of frequent underlying medical conditions (present in ≥10.0% of patients) increased with age. Dianna Cowern @thephysicsgirl #MECFS is unimaginably isolating, especially for severe patients like Dianna. The disease just doesn't make sense; even for me, it's taken a year of caring for her every day to start to understand. To get a sense, Dianna has spent the last year and a half in her room, unable to watch tv or read a book or spend time with friends. She cannot walk or take care of herself. She can brush her teeth and feed herself, but not much more than that. We can cuddle and hold hands, but sometimes that's too much for her. It's so removed from normal life, and so much worse than you could ever imagine. It's hard to share these things, because I fear people will blame me or blame her for not treating her properly, for not taking this medication or that supplement, or following such and such a protocol. Or worse yet, suggesting that all she needs is to get up and go for a walk. Even on this post, people will say those things. But there's no consistent treatment or even diagnostics at this point. So, we are left alone, in pain, wondering if what we're doing is right or wrong, if there's something else we should have done a year ago that would have avoided all this. We try not to think like that, but it creeps in from time to time. If you are a physician, please consider getting involved in treating and researching #longcovid and #MECFS While Dianna is still very sick, her doctors and treatments ease her burden and give us hope. Newspaper clipping: The Philadelphia Inquirer. Healthy schools. A recent op-ed rightly highlighted the financial barriers to becoming a Pennsylvania teacher. However, the state should also prioritize tackling airborne viruses in schools, which are now hazardous workplaces due to the spread of COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza. The CDC found that students were the main driver of COVID transmission during the initial reopening phase, endangering their health and that of their teachers. Insufficient air filtration and poor ventilation in buildings and buses are at the core of this problem. In 2023, the governor budgeted $500 million to reduce environmental hazards, which could be used to update school HVAC systems. Federal American Rescue Plan funds are still available. Inexpensive HEPA or Corsi-Rosenthal filters should be placed in every classroom, and opening windows encouraged. Let’s not tolerate sick schools anymore.
