Dangerous products do get to market, or even stay on the market.

Infant lounger deaths higher than initially reported, NBC News investigation finds – NBC News – May 29, 2023 Alexander Hoehn-Saric, Chair of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC): “So we have laws that restrict our ability to talk to the public about all the information we know about products. So if I knew about a danger about a product right now I couldn’t go and tell you about it without actually first going to the company itself and letting them know what we’re going to say.”

For the government to step in and regulate to prevent harm to consumers, there has to be more public pressure on elected representatives to make it so, otherwise the industry interests get their way, and have the regs written to benefit the companies instead.

“Many people rationalize that if it were really dangerous the government wouldn’t let it be advertised. They are wrong in that thinking. It is dangerous and the government does let it be advertised.”

– Rick Pollay, Pack of Lies: The Advertising of Tobacco (1992)

De-regulation actually means re-regulation – in favour of industry, not people over profits, so there’s really no such thing as deregulation.

Deregulation is another way of saying buyer beware. By Chloe Humbert 2025-01-22

My letter to reps:

What’s going on with “deregulation” makes no sense. If the government allows dangerous products for children to be sold, and allows dishonest advertising targeting parents to sell them this stuff, then how can the parents be charged with crimes when something terrible happens? Prevention. Sensible people with sense want PREVENTION. The government is locking up the wrong people. It’s not the people buying this crap because they’re fooled who should be locked up, it’s the people who allow these advertisements and allow these products to be shipped for sale who should be standing trial.

Please feel free to copy or repurpose for your own letters to reps.

Ignore nose hype and don’t waste money. More pandemic profiteering that might violate regulations, and definitely isn’t ready for prime time. Chloe Humbert Dec 03, 2024

I stay FAR away from any avoidable UV lights. If it’s UV, it’s likely capable of harming human cells – there’s no long-term evidence otherwise. And exposing people to risks repeatedly while insisting IT’S MILD sounds awfully familiar. Chloe Humbert Aug 07, 2024
